Robert's Journey with Laser Engraving: Empowering the Next Generation
Editor's Note
In a world shaped by rapid innovation, there are people who don't just use technology – they inspire with it. Robert, a retired engineer and passionate DIY mentor, is one of those rare individuals. Through laser engraving, especially with iKier laser devices, he empowers new generations to learn, create, and build a meaningful future.
I first met Robert in 2022 and remain grateful to this day to have met someone with such a deep passion for laser technology. His commitment perfectly aligns with the iKier team's philosophy: intelligent creation leads to a more meaningful life. Robert's dedication constantly reminds me that if I can create something with my own hands, I should act and make it a reality.
Passion becomes a mission
Education in the field of laser technology has always played an important role in Robert's life.
I have always called myself a self-taught engineer – not because I knew everything, but because I never stopped learning. Eventually, an illness forced me into retirement, but it never took away my desire to teach. For more than a decade, I dedicated myself to passing on practical skills to young people.
Due to the nature of my work and additional practical activities, I was constantly in contact with young people as well as older generations.
I noticed a growing gap: young people were no longer developing skills because older generations didn't have the time or patience to teach them, explain things to them, or guide them.
So I started working with schools and teachers who invited me to workshops, creative camps, and technology demonstrations. I always had to bring my own materials, depending on the topic and purpose.
The impact of this guidance is simple, but profound:
When someone thanks you for your patience, tells you, "Because of you, this laser stayed in our home," or gives you a small gift, you realize that you have influenced someone on their path – even if only for a moment and even if it was just a spark of kindness.
Why Laser Education Matters
Laser education is essential, but still inaccessible to many young people – especially those from low-income families. By showing them that laser engraving doesn't just exist online, but is real – that they can touch it, see results, and understand professional potential – we give them hope and broaden their career prospects.
School workshops equipped with complete laser systems (protective housings, smoke filters, ventilation) could help two generations of students:
older students who learn to operate the machines and produce learning materials, and younger ones who benefit from it to develop practical and intellectual skills.
Online, I found software companies that offer free or discounted programs for students. But I rarely see device manufacturers offering special prices for schools, youth clubs, or children's associations – or donating devices. It's as if a long-term vision is missing.
If a child develops a passion for lasers, they will eventually want their own laser machine or pursue a career in this technology. Whether as a hobby or a profession, they never forget the brand where they took their first steps. In the end, they often want the same laser that started it all.
Mastering Challenges — and Transforming Them into Solutions
Laser engraving naturally brings technical challenges, but I have embraced each one. I conducted hundreds of tests, researched countless methods, and shared simplified solutions online to help both beginners and experienced users.
I disassembled every new model, studied every detail, and provided valuable feedback to the laser community.
Grow together with iKier
The need for laser technology is not limited to young people. Older people also need it – whether to earn extra income, pursue a hobby, or keep themselves meaningfully occupied.
I love to travel. Different cities, different countries, different destinations. And everywhere I go, I look for souvenirs. But too often I see the same products in store after store. It's obvious that they come from the same large manufacturers and are distributed in bulk to retailers.
No one seems to be showing these people that if they were to manufacture their own products – unique pieces, personalized for each customer – they could very quickly recoup the investment in a machine, become independent, and earn more.
With a simple gesture, a precise piece of advice, a business can grow quickly. And anyone can learn to operate a laser. It's not plug-and-play, but with determination and effort, by learning tips in the program and posts in the group, you can achieve technical independence. There were people who started from scratch and, in three months, became specialists in a specific activity and built a functioning business. You don't have to learn everything at once. First, you can choose a specific activity → cutting products or engraving a specific material. But once you perfect this technique, you already have a steady source of income.
This is exactly where iKier's philosophy resonates with me:
Intelligent creation empowers everyone to express themselves in a personal and meaningful way. With the right tools, anyone – young or old – can transform their imagination into something tangible, something unique.
Personalized creation doesn't just create beautiful things — it changes lives.
A lifelong mission: teaching skills, building futures
Even as a child, I was fascinated by technology. I constantly wanted to learn, experiment, and implement every idea that came to mind or that I saw somewhere.
Although my passion was great, resources were scarce, books and magazines were few, and no one had the patience to explain more complex things to me. Until one day, on vacation, one of my uncles told me to take a notebook and follow him. While he worked on his projects, he gave me my first introduction to electronics. Just the basics, but it was enough.
That shaped the rest of my life.
I later considered it a lasting mission for me. If you want to secure the future, you have to shape the present!
The Birth of iKier — and Robert's Contribution
I witnessed the creation of iKier. I was asked what features a laser machine should have, how it should be designed, and what qualities would make it truly powerful. The team said, "We want a laser that is technically superior." And they achieved it.
The development engineers followed the requirements, implemented innovations, and made some necessary compromises to keep the laser affordable. Some "weak points" remain, but I hope they will be improved in future models.
Building a supportive laser community
When I was looking for my first guide on working with lasers, there was no one to give it to me. In the iKier user group, I decided that I could share my knowledge from my own experience and give advice to beginners. Almost daily I read every post and tried to help. But the strength of a group lies not in the number of members, but in their ability to communicate. That's why I asked those who were helped to help others in turn – as much as they can. Not just technical advice, but also personal experiences, attitudes, and working methods. I believed that this increases the value of the group and achieves better and faster results when everyone tries to help.
And the solutions began to appear. Technical improvements, 3D prints, various videos with practical instructions. Everyone used their own skills to help. Friendships were formed, impressions were exchanged, challenges were started, projects were shared. No harsh words, no hate, no accusations, no disputes.
And that meant something. Users who came from other groups, from other lasers, wanted iKier precisely because they saw that there was always someone here who answered their questions as quickly as possible and offered solutions when needed – all in collaboration with technical support in more serious cases.
Robert's Advice for Beginners
And regarding this adventure → whether small or large, young or old, girl or boy, you shouldn't be afraid to test and experiment. No matter what project you have, do a few tests on the material first. Don't be afraid to get to know your laser, to learn how power, speed, and number of passes can be used effectively. Constantly write down everything you do! And at the end of the day, look at what you have achieved, draw the necessary conclusions, and check whether your device needs maintenance! If you take care of your device, it will take care of you.
And never play around with the protection of your eyes, your lungs, your machines, and your entire workshop. Never leave the laser unattended for even a second and always keep the fire extinguisher within reach! You can create things that have never existed before and be successful in business or as a hobby – but only if you are healthy and disciplined.
Final Thoughts: "Burn it all!"
Robert's story shows that it is not technology alone that changes the world — but people.
With passion, knowledge, and a willingness to share, an iKier laser engraver can become:
A learning tool
A business opportunity
A gateway to creativity
A path to a better future
His story is more than inspiration — it is a guide for anyone who wants to learn, teach, or grow with laser engraving.
